Scarlett`s Barn is one of a particularly fine group of outbuildings in the grounds of West Kitcham Farmhouse, and is the only one converted for occupation. The others (all of them are named after the owners` children) are very well maintained and positioned in an extended courtyard arrangement with the farmhouse (currently only occasionally used) at the end, providing a very attractive overall effect with views over the surrounding countryside of this little known region on the Devon /Cornwall border. The whole area is full of interest. Launceston and its ancient castle is nearby, and with the main route west only a few miles away, communications are excellent: historic Plymouth (the Barbican, the Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America, and the Hoe, famous for Drake`s game of bowls before the Armada); and Exeter, city and County Town, with Roman remains and brand new shopping centre, can both be easily reached – both need a full day to do them justice. Dartmoor with its rugged tors and beautiful rivers and coombes is almost on the doorstep (don`t miss nearby Lydford Gorge), and the North Cornish coast (beaches and surfing) is less than an hour`s drive. There are also a number of National Trust houses such as Castle Drogo, Saltram and Cotehele not far away. The RHS Rosemoor gardens near Gt. Torrington is also well worth a visit. The nearest village, Lifton, is famous for the Arundel Arms (fishing hotel with good restaurant) and the large Boxing Day meet – a big local occasion. Scarlett`s Barn has been carefully converted to a high standard and is light and comfortable, its shutters giving it a slightly continental feel. Its peaceful and private setting in lovely grounds makes it a perfect place to return to at the end of a busy day exploring this interesting and beautiful region.
