| The
West Wing of an impressive manor house in a secluded wooded
valley...
Castle is situated in south-east Cornwall a mile south
of medieval Lostwithiel, the former county capital town.
The site is reputedly that of King Mark's castle (the defensive
stronghold, Castledore, is 2 miles away) and of his son
Tristan's ill-fated love affair with Isolde. The surrounding
area has been described as the most beautiful and unspoilt
part of the county, with many quiet footpaths (the ancient
Saints Way passes by the front gate) and shady byroads.
There are many attractive and-even in high season-secluded
beaches within a short drive including Pridmouth, near Menabilly
(Daphne Du Maurier's Manderley").Polkerris, Lantic Bay and
the historic Port of Fowey are just 5 miles away. Bodmin Moor
and the north coast are within half an hour's drive. The National
Trust property Lanhydrock House is very close, as are many
famous gardens, while St Michael's Mount, Lands End and the
new Tate in St Ives make interesting day trips.
The present house at Castle (a former medieval manor) was
built about 1810, its mainly classical lines incorporating
gothic features. The scale and materials are typical of
a Cornish country house with massive granite quoins, pierced
balconies and arched multipane windows in dressed granite.
The gardens are extensive and are particularly impressive.
They contain a variety of large trees (Redwoods, Noble Fir,
Beeches, Palms) and shrubs (30 ft Rhododendrons, 20 ft Camellias
and Azaleas. Each apartment has an area of garden with garden
furniture and barbecue in addition to access to the surrounding
grounds.
The West Wing at Castle is so designed that it lends itself to being used as a whole unit sleeping up to 8 people plus 2 babies or as 2 individual self-contained apartments, with private entrances from the gardens. The accommodation is furnished so as to create a comfortable ambience; much attention has been paid to interior decor and the apartments have thermostatically controlled underfloor heating, open fires, fitted kitchens and state-of-the-art bathrooms.
